Young people create real work

A different kind of creative space

A real studio built around young people

The Making Place combines music and media facilities with experienced youth-work support. Young people aged 10–18 can explore music production, recording, podcasting and filmmaking in small groups where they have time to try ideas, develop skills and create work they are proud of.

Delivery is practical, project-based and shaped around each group — serious about creative quality without making the environment feel intimidating.

Following a successful pilot, The Making Place is developing its programme of small-group creative opportunities for young people in Bath.

Our purpose

Creative opportunity should not depend on income or circumstance

Bath is often seen as an affluent city, but that overall picture can hide pockets of deprivation and families under financial pressure. Specialist creative opportunities can be expensive, leaving some young people priced out.

Funded placesAt least one fully funded place has been offered on every programme delivered so far.
Reducing barriersThe Making Place exists to reduce those barriers through small groups, flexible support, practical creative routes and funded access.
Becoming a CICThe Making Place is preparing to become a Community Interest Company (CIC), formalising its community purpose as the provision grows.

What young people and parents told us

The strongest evidence is what the people using the space noticed and valued.

What shaped the next stage

Small groups are essential.
Young people have enough time, attention and space to settle.
Participation stays practical.
Young people make, record, edit and take on real project roles.
Finished outcomes matter.
Projects lead to music, podcasts and media they can genuinely value.

The studio

A creative environment without the pressure

The space feels purposeful and exciting, while the delivery stays relaxed enough for young people to experiment, make mistakes and find the role that works for them.

Real equipment, understandable delivery

More than a laptop in a spare room

The studio can support full-band recording, music production, podcasts, voiceovers and film content. The equipment raises ambition; the youth-work approach makes it accessible.

Young people can move between creative and technical roles, work independently or collaborate, and see how a project develops from an idea into a finished piece.
